Tammock

Problem

Hammocks are great but traditional hammocks are limited to where you can use them. The problem was to figure out a way to hang a hammock without trees so we could go hammock camping in the deserts of Utah, or anywhere else in the world.

Our goal was to design a portable solution that would allow outdoor adventurists to use their hammocks anywhere in the world. Wether it be a desert, beach, music festival, hotel balcony, bedroom, or their very own backyard.

As we developed the design, we discovered many hammock-lovers share the same problems we faced such as unpredictable weather, storage needs, bugs, and animals. This gave us the idea of putting a protective tent around the hammock. And so, the Tammock was born.

Development

The Tammock went through several iterations before the initial product release in 2019

August 2016

Proof of concept was two wooden posts on each end which were anchored into the ground using stakes

January 2017

1st protoype supported the user from overhead. This design was unstable due to a lack of support from the sides causing it to fold like a parallelogram.

May 2018

2nd protoype supported the user from underneath to be more in line with the forces of the hammock. Aluminum, carbon fiber, and steel frames were made and tested in this configuration

June 2019

Final frame design utilized steel frame

Engineering

Engineering calculations were used to determine the necessary tube thickness to support a user weighing 300 pounds with a factor of safety of 2.

FEA testing used to test and validates prototypes.

Dimensional and weight testing physical prototypes
